🏆 BEAM Theatre Shines on National Stage
Hertford’s cultural hub shortlisted for two top industry awards
Hertford’s BEAM theatre and cinema has earned national recognition, making the shortlist for two prestigious design and engineering awards.
The landmark building is a finalist in the Public Building category at the 2025 Brick Awards, celebrating outstanding use of brick in architecture. It’s also shortlisted in the Institution of Structural Engineers Awards, which honour projects demonstrating innovation, sustainability, and positive community impact.
Judges described BEAM as “a thoughtful reuse-first transformation that breathes new life into a dated theatre while reducing environmental impact.”
Designed by Bennetts Associates with Integral Engineering Design, BEAM reimagined the former Hertford Theatre into a vibrant multi-purpose venue featuring a 547-seat main theatre, three cinema screens, a studio space, community rooms, and an all-day café and bar.
Councillor Sarah Hopewell praised the recognition, calling it “a testament to the outstanding design and dedication of the entire project team.” Winners will be announced in London this November.
🚉 Hertford East train services nationalised
Greater Anglia’s train services, including Hertford East, have officially been taken into public ownership. Services are now run by the Department for Transport under GA Trains Limited, ahead of being integrated into Great British Railways. Timetables, fares and staff remain unchanged, and the company’s website will continue to operate as usual.
Greater Anglia, named Rail Operator of the Year 2025, has achieved 93.9% punctuality over the past year. Managing Director Martin Beable thanked staff and customers, saying the team is “committed to maintaining high standards under public ownership.”
Meanwhile, services from Hertford North (run by Govia Thameslink) will move to public control in May 2026, with talk of a possible future transfer to Transport for London.
