📈 Retail vacancy rate rises in Hertford
Hertford’s retail vacancy rate has risen to 13.9%, up from 10.5% in February, driven by recent closures and new units in the town centre.
Shops lost include PopWorld, Proove Pizza and Peach, while new-build premises in Railway Street have added to the total. However, fresh arrivals are on the way, with a craft beer bar and salon set to open on Railway Street, and a new bistro underway at Lea Wharf.
🚮 Councillors updated on new bin collections
East Herts councillors have been briefed on the rollout of the district’s new waste and recycling system, launched in August. Of the 66,453 households, 97% received their bins on time, rising to 99% by mid-September, with just 60 homes still waiting.
Cllr Tim Hoskin admitted “huge inefficiencies” in communication, with up to 800 daily calls to customer services and many complaints. While food waste volumes were higher than expected, residual non-recyclable waste has fallen. A full written report will be presented on 4 November.

⏰ How to Find Your Most Productive Timeframes
Ever feel foggy at 10am but full of ideas at 9pm? You’re not alone. Productivity isn’t one-size-fits-all - it depends on your body’s rhythms, environment, and the type of work you’re doing. The key is to identify your peak windows and align your tasks with them.
Here’s how to do it:
Track your energy: For a week, jot down how alert and focused you feel every few hours. Patterns will emerge.
Match tasks to energy: Save deep, focused work for your peak times; handle admin and lighter tasks when energy dips.
Experiment: Shift key tasks to different times and see what sticks.
Know your chronotype: Morning larks, night owls, and “hummingbirds” (somewhere in between) all have different natural peaks.
Build in recovery: Short breaks (quick walk, stretching) help prevent burnout and keep your focus sharp.
Reassess regularly: Energy levels shift with seasons, stress, and routine, so adjust as needed.
The result? Less wasted effort and more impact - because you’re working with your natural flow, not against it.
