🍺 Our Beloved Bengeo Pub, The Greyhound, Announces Closure
Sadly, The Greyhound in Bengeo, will be closing it’s doors on Friday 3rd October. Despite many discussions with McMullens, rising costs and higher rents meant they couldn’t reach a new agreement.
The owners announced: “After more than 20 years in the trade and 3½ years at the Greyhound, this has been a very hard decision. We’d like to thank our wonderful staff, family, friends, and of course all of you-our fantastic customers-for your support. We’re unsure what the future holds for the pub, but we’ll always cherish being part of this amazing community.”
Their Thai food will be sorely missed! 🙁
🚧 Council Pushes For Crackdown On Rogue Roadworks
Hertfordshire County Council has written to the Department for Transport urging tougher penalties for utility companies that mismanage roadworks.
While most works are carried out to a good standard, poor planning and overrunning projects are causing daily disruption for residents and businesses. With over 60,000 roadworks each year, the council says the current fines - £80 for breaching permit conditions and £300 for unauthorised works - are too low to deter multi-million-pound companies, many of whom treat them as routine costs.
Since April 2022, the council has issued more than 10,000 fines. It is now calling for higher penalties and greater powers over inspections to ensure utility firms take their responsibilities seriously.
